MISTRANSLATION:

Emily Jung is a Korean American designer based in New York City.  She is a graduate of Fashion Institute of Technology where she earned her BFA in Fashion Design with specialization in Sportswear.   Her thesis titled MISTRANSLATION, which featured modern interpretations of her heritage clothing through methods of “mistranslations”, received the Critic’s Choice Award at the 2016 Future of Fashion BFA Show.

MISTRANSLATION is a collection inspired by her relationship with languages and her heritage since her move to New York City as a child.  She explores the confusion of her childhood experience of adapting to English and plays on the concept of distorted translations to reinterpret the Korean dress known as “Hanbok” into modern renditions.

Memories and descriptions of Hanbok were written in English then consecutively translated into multiple languages.  The resulting translation was then re-translated back into English.  The final text produced a kind of linguistic distortion of the original writing that was presented to friends to be drawn into their own interpretation of the distorted text.  Finally, the drawing interpretations as well as the mistranslated text were taken as direction in creating several digital collages that went on to become the basis for the collection.
